Divergent by Veronica Roth Book Review

Divergent is a story that focuses in the genre of dystopian societies of the future. The book takes place in the city of Chicago, where in the future it is sectioned off into five factions. Each of the five factions are based on personality traits that a person can have, Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). You are only allowed to choose one faction and once you leave your faction you cannot go back.

On the 16th birthday of each boy and girl in each faction they are to undergo a series of tests to show which faction that they are best suited for. They have a choice to either go with the faction they are tested the highest in or stay with their current faction and family they are born into. If you choose to leave your faction and go to your new faction you will leave behind all that you know and your family as well.

Once you have selected your new faction you will have to undergo extreme testing and trials plus an initiation process to enter into your new faction. If you fail this process you will become what is known as “factionless” where you belong to no faction and are considered an outcast and live on the streets unprotected in the city.

The main character of the book is Beatrice Prior who tests above normal and finds that she can fit into many factions at once. This is a very unheard of test result known as “divergent”. Divergent test above normal in simulations and do not fit into the government mold of one faction etc. The government finds these people to be extremely dangerous and a secret plan is set to destroy all that are discovered to be divergent.

Beatrice struggles to find her place in her new faction while missing her family in her old faction. Beatrice has many inner struggles as well as many struggles within her new faction. Not knowing who she can trust she is constantly in a state of panic while she also aligns herself with a mysterious boy named Four. She encounters new situations and deals with self imposed barriers while battling daily for her place in her new faction. Beatrice must hide who she is for her own safety and finds the world as she knows it is about to change and none of the five factions will be the same.

This book is extremely well written and once you get into it you will not be able to put it down. Divergent is a true nail bitter and fun interactive read. If you are a fan of the Hunger Games you will love this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, futuristic genres and romance all rolled into one book.
