Movie Review for Jolene

I saw a very intriguing movie the other day on Showtime called Jolene. I missed the first half of the movie but I became very enthralled with the storyline. The movie was directed by Dan Ireland based on the novel from E.L. Doctorow’s novel “Jolene: A-Life”. This movie follows the life of an orphaned girl Jolene who travels the span of ten years of her life ages 15 to 25 moving cross-country experiencing life, love and major heartbreak.

The movie stars Jessica Chastain. I liked her acting and she has a very unique and classic look. She has the essence of an old Hollywood movie star and I can see her act in period pieces very well. The movie’s dialogue at best is mediocre but the acting from the stars in the movie like Francis Fisher, Chazz Palminteri, Dermot Mulroney, and Michael Vartan are phenomenal.

The movie is very quirky with a lot of sexual references and adult themes. So if you are offended easy or don’t like that you will not like this movie. This movie takes on very extreme and sometimes disturbing storylines. It deals with Jolene making bad choices, choosing the wrong men and learning to survive at any costs. Sometimes the character made me upset when she always went with a man to save her instead of leaning on herself. She did learn to finally make it on her own but not until after she made a lot of mistakes and experienced many bad relationships and choices. She was a victim in a lot of circumstances and she was forced into some things she would not have done otherwise. The movie travels over a ten year period and you see her change and evolve with every new city.

I like movies that are outside the box and not your usual story line that you see in all movies. The main character did things I would never do but it was entertaining to see her character be uninhibited. The interactions with her and the other movie characters and her effect on them, was also very interesting.

I recommend this movie Jolene that came out in 2008. It is available on Net flicks and on some cable channels right now. Jessica Chastain can also be seen in The Help, The Tree of Life and a slew of new movies for 2012. I have not seen her other movies but plan to rent them now since I am a new fan of hers. Jessica Chastain I predict will be a break out star for 2012.
